In March of this year, Niantic sold its gaming portfolio to Scopely for the princely sum of $3.85 billion. The blockbuster deal meant that some big games, including mobile stalwart Pokémon GO, were now under new ownership and management, and doubtlessly some wondered if this might mean change was coming. Well, change has come, but at Niantic, not Scopely. Niantic Spatial, the technology branch of the company, has let go of 68 workers. Apparently this was a move known for some time now, but it nonetheless has taken some by surprise, especially coming not long after the sale to Scopely.
Scopely has opted to respond to this news about Niantic by letting the public know that there will be no layoffs or personnel cuts coming ant time soon to the teams it purchased in the $3.85 billion deal. In the statement, Scopely states “it will not be making any workforce reductions as part of our acquisition of Niantic’s games business.” This is good news for the people working on Pokémon GO, Pikmin Bloom, and other games that were formerly under the Niantic banner, particularly as great upheaval remains a constant within the industry.
